Work started on the Lilleystone study in July 2024 as the result of seeing a photograph of my great grandmother wearing an impressive hat. In a family photograph album she was always wearing a hat that was more noticeable than anyone else’s. Her mother, my great-great grandmother, was born Sarah Lilleystone. I liked the surname and thought that maybe it was fairly unusual so I researched the frequency and distribution of this surname and decided it was a one-name study I would like to tackle. I then registered it with the Guild and began my research.
